Happy New Year to all my friends around the world.
This year is the year of Dragon.

Last year has been a tough year for Japan and riots has accured everywhere around in the world.
It was a good chance for me to think of what the value is in life and what is important for me through out the year. Hope everything setles down as soon as possible.

I was able to work on variouse projects last year.

hey Ben, it's odd that you're using windows instead of mac.
ya, i get that all the time. but I used to use macintosh long time ago.

- 20years ago, when I was still a kid.
we had Apple 2 at our house.
one day I asked my father about it
"so... what are you always doing with this box every weekend? what is it to it?"
"it's a computer."
"a what?"
after all the long story he had to say, we had a tournament of tetris and invader game with my sisters.
After a while, when I got used to logging in with it, I remember I was saying
"can't we have a better way of logging in and all this waiting? I can't believe everyone is doing this in front of this black image and typing in the same thing every single time. "
"Im sure it will get better in the near future."
"even when you're moving from left to right. punching all this arrows forever... "
this was few years before Nintendo was out.

- 15years ago, when I was in middle school
"hey dad! are you using this macintosh anymore?"
"do you want it?"
"ya, if you're not using it I'll take it."
"what do you want to do with it?"
"umm. what can you do with this?"
that line made my Sunday to a "lecture of macintosh day".

WWW with all that noise from the router.
from all that, I was interested with MIDI composing. it was easier than learning bunch of instrument for a full orchestra.
After a while my questions were getting too complicated for my father to answer.
Since I was in a band that time I asked my teacher about it.
"do you happen to know what a MIDI composing is?"
"oh ya, the piece I gave you the other day was done with MIDI."
"cool! I've started doing it and some parts that I have no clue about."
"what!? you're doing MIDI already? I'm surprised!"
my friend who was my drum rival was there as well with a question mark.
"hey ben, what the hell is MIDI?"
he came to my house the next weekend and said that he has a computer at home as well.
"dad! is it possible to give a software to a friend and copy it?"
"NO!! you're not allowed to do that!"
"so it's not impossible..."
"you can in theory, but NO!"
"well it doesnt seem like you always have to insert the software all the time like Nintendo. once it's in there it fine right?"
I didnt have the guts not to give this treasure to a good rival and knew he will do it in an interesting way, which was my other treasure.
next day monday morning
"hey, it seems like you can put this software in your computer. "
that night
"where's that software box!? Ben. what you are doing is illegal!!!"
"wtf..."
after few months, we had some couple other friends joining the MIDI gangs and ended up asking our band teacher to rearrange the piece we were working on. Handing him couple stacks of CDs and floppies.
"if we keep on rearranging our cords and sessions, we will end up not being able to practice!!"
I remember he had one of the best smile on him in front of the monitor that time.
at the end of the year I remember he said our year was always unpredictable and fun to challenge to the limit of music together.

- 10years ago
my university entrance exam "war" was over.
"hey dad! I want a computer."
"do you have money?"
"ya, I've got a grand here"
"pack your stuffs. we're going to Akihabara."
no questions. that Sunday was a tour around Akihabara. ending up with a laptop on the way back.
"you're a hard core geek dad. you've seem to know everything about this place. I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't married."
But came back with a story of Steve Jobs.
Photoshop 3.0 i think...
that was the first thing I had in my computer. ya, no big deal. just draw and sketch in the computer. learning CAD in school and getting deep into HTML. I instinctually knew the day will come when everyone will have their site and exchanging their works. this was before blogs and SNS started without Homepage Builder. I was wrong. Myspace started along and there was no need for all that coding anymore.

i was in LA.
one of the top architecture schools of digital architecture. bunch of guys like me, hackers and all the talented people who were all beyond my mind. not a single person from LA and all around the world. I was proud. I was excited to see everyone's ideas and challenging spirit.

- few days ago
when most of the time our walls on SNS medias, it is always bunch of random topics and bunch of confusion, that day was clear and stylish. everyone was talking about him. Steve Jobs. my sister, far away from a geek, has sent me and the family his speech at Stanford Graduation. my father had a long reply when most of the time he doesn't reply. I replied another long line as well, when most of the time I tend to only skim through the family mail.

connecting the dots where things started from Apple2 to today.
sometimes we get hit with a brick in the head.
changing the life style of one with an idea.
stay hungry. stay foolish.
stay hungry. stay foolish.

The competition I have been doing in the begining of this year has been chosen as the First Prize Winning design.
Site : China
Program : Theater, Museum, Buisness Towers...
Competitiors : Bernard Tchumi, MVRDV (Invitation Competition)
The project will start from an year from now.

Id like to post the image and rendering but it is told to be prohibited.
I will update it here when it is possible.

神奈川県のとある川に不思議な彫刻がある。

日本を発つ前、車でそのすぐそばを走行していた。身体は反応した。動物的なテレトリー意識が瞬時に。
「なんだ？あれは？」
暗闇の中、何かが揺らめいていた。気のせいか？いや、なんかいたぞ。まーいいか。とまた運転に集中していた。

同じ時期、ある芸術家の美術館に足を運んだ。よく似た作品がそこには展示されていた。

これは...

調べたらやはり同じ作品の模型だった。彼が手がけた中で唯一好きな作品である。

彼がおっていたものはきっと「そこには存在しないが、意識の中で存在し得るもの。」像、音、香り、風などを彫刻を通して表現したんだと美術館を廻り終える頃に「感じて」いた。彼はそれが色というモノを通り越してカタチで見ることができた人物だったのではないかと感じる。彼はそれを描き、作品にそのみたモノをも封じ込められる作家であったのかもしれない。
キュビズム
ピカソを追ったのではなく、彼はピカソが追ったモノを追うことができた。彼はそれを人よりも強く感じ、自らその感受性を鍛えたのだろう。彼の友人に当たる建築家もそういった人物であったとわかる。

ついこの前まで「やっぱり川の横に駐車してあの彫刻を見に行くべきだったなー。」と後悔をしていた。が、今思えば停めなくてもよかったのか。と後悔を修正した。

『べん今日は休みだとよ。中華街で飲茶でも食いに行こうぜ。』

事務所にいた友達からの電話だった。

昨日の夜中4時頃コンペは無事に終わった。最初の頃に僕とクリリンでデザインを進め、インドから帰ってきたもう1人が加わり3人で3Dを回していた。それから気がつけば人はどんどん増え、3人はお互いがどこで何をしているのかをなんとなくしか把握できていなかった。メールでのファイルのやりとりはしていても、物理的に会話をしていなかった日もあっただろう。暗黙のチームプレーもいっぱいあった。周りが「落ち着けよ。」と割って入る言い合いも争いもいっぱいあった。3人だけが夜中残っている日もあった。
最後の最後のpdfを出力する時、僕ら3人は自然とそれを共に確認していた。
「あれ、なんか久しぶりだね。」
と一人が気がついた。この2ヶ月を込めた握手をしていた。終わったんだと実感する瞬間だった。

いつもは事務所にいるはずの時間、バスで中華街にいる2人のとこへ向った。まるでこの街に初めてきた日のようだった。

今日は感動的だった。

引き続き今日も模型に悩まされまたもや昨日作り変えたファイルが読み込み不可であると連絡が入る。
magicでの解析は完璧だったのにできないはずはない。ボスは流石に感情的になり始めその会社を疑い始めていた。

昨日モデリング方法を相談したツワモノZ選手のことを思い出した。「なんでそんな手間のかかることをやっているの？」と「僕が中国にいた頃に発注していた会社はrhinoのデータを送るだけだったよ。」
鶴仙人にすぐ提案した。
鶴:「俺をCCに入れろと伝えろ。」
彼に無茶を言いその会社の連絡先を知る中国の友人に大至急メールをしてもらった。

夜、中国が朝を迎える頃、一通のメールが届いた。お礼のメールをすぐした。

「力になれて嬉しいよ。yuichiとnickから君の話は聞いているよ。」
ロスの友の友だった。

z事務所の真骨頂

数年前に秋葉原である事件がおき、僕はある決意を固めていた。昨日この事件のことを思い出したことであの決意に熱が戻りました。

コンペもそろそろ終わりに近づき出力する時期に入っています。

昨日
外注レンダリングのためのモデルを完成させ次に3dprint用のファイルを作成していた。普通はこの作業を数日かけるところを時間がないからその日に終わらせるようにボスから指示。それを二人でやり、夜中4時ごろ帰宅した。

本日
ちょっと遅めに出所し、ザーボンとの会議があるため軽めのレンダリングを朝から用意。昨日共に戦い、昼に来るであろうチームメートのpcを暗黙で借り、半分ボーッとしながらも着々とレンダリングは出来上がっていく。

鶴仙人に一本の電話が入る。中国の3dprint会社だった。本日はここから始まります。
鶴:「べん！昨日のファイルが全部読み込めてない。」
べ:「全部って...」
鶴:「今すぐ形式を変える直前の3dデータをまとめて圧縮しろ。出来たらまたすぐ中国に送る。」
そのファイルをすぐに作成し中国からの電話を待つ。その間にザーボンのレンダリングを終わらせ、万が一のための対策をリサーチ。Magic。このプログラムなら作業を軽減させられる。このカタログをチームに送信と共にITに電話するがそのソフトは所内にないとのこと。が、1人だけ持っているやつがいるとの情報を入手。そうこうしているうちに中国からの電話。
鶴:『はい。うん。そうか。ダメか。わかった。』
電話を切ったと同時に会議が始まった。
鶴:「この際なんでもいい。時間はない。俺の覚悟はできた。」
との内容。
無茶ぶりに耐えきれなかったぐちゃぐちゃモデルは更なる無茶ぶりに進んでいった。普通はこの行程をプリント会社がやってくれる。それをできないと彼らは言う。だからうちの事務所がそれを受けもち、ちょこっとやったことがあった僕ともう一人の新人二人で回すことになった。そしてそれを知識はないが有能な先輩Z選手に僕らは指示を出していた。隣の席の子がボソッと言った。
M「事務所全員にメールして相談してみれば。」
400人のZ選手へのメールは一斉に送られた。10分後には読みきれないメールが溜まっていた。もう一人のボスと二人で戦略を練り5パターンを作り出した。精度が高いモノ、素早いモノ、そこそこ早いもの、違うプログラムを通したモノ、などなど。それを先ほどの所内で1人だけmagicをもつ彼のもとへ。
30分後方針は決まりそのアイディアを提供してくれたZ選手のもとへ。そしてそれをチームに持ち帰り種を植え、発芽させた。

何とかなりそうなモノを確認し、気がつけば今日もこの時間に帰宅。静かな日々のための嵐。明日は何が起きる。かかってこい。

plastic forks and knife.

you will need a lot of forks. no glue nor wire. it will kill the transparency if you do. keep it simple but random.

前に作ったのを改良してみました。自由に宙を舞う白鳥と黒鳥をイメージ。
写真が実物に負けちゃってる。

still in the process of doing a competition for china.
we will be submitting by the end of February.
feels like I've been working on this for more than three months now.

載せられる作品が全くないので最近描いたオダギリジョーさんです。
不思議な色を持った俳優さんですね。

天下一武道会(コンペ)はまだまだ続いております。
なんだか自信をつけたり、失ったりの変な波にもまれながらも前に進んでいる日々です。

クリリンは確かに凄腕です。
仕事の仕方を知っています。
僕は全力を注ぐ所を間違えたり、随分先の事を進めてしまったり、亀千人と鶴仙人の仕事のコミニュケーションに手こずってます。僕だけではないのですが...まー経験ですね。

そう言えば先日、自転車に乗ってたら車に轢かれました。無事です。

So how is everyone?
Seems like there's a lot of people getting cut down in the neighbor.
Can never be aware enough of these things...

そろそろ節句の時期ですね。ひな祭りのお雛様を飾る時期です。昔は紙人形を折って舟に乗せて厄払いをしたそうです。

先日AA School DRLの卒業設計を観てきました。全部はちゃんと見れなかったけど、なんだか少しガッカリしました。これが世界トップクラスの建築学校かーって。そしてなぜ自分がこの事務所に採用されたのかが不思議と理解できた。

思えば去年の今頃この事務所に連絡をしていた頃でした。たった10分のために、ロスを思い切って切り捨て、ビザ取得のために日本に帰国。アメリカにいた頃、永住権を取ろうかなと考えていた時期があった。そのために留学したとも言える。とんでもないものを捨てたのかもしれない。たまにそう思う。

自分の今までの選択肢について考えると、当時は分からなかったけど偶然当たっていたなー。と感じるものもあれば、今はまだ分からないというものもある。
